Backlinking – how important is it?
It is a known fact that a website is ranked more highly by Google for the number of links referred to it from other websites.
It should be noted that some websites have more weight to their links. The higher the PR number, the better e.g. PR=7 or PR=4 carries far more weight than PR=1. You should gather from this that PR=0 carries the least weight at all and I would say it carries no weight at all and is worthless in backlinking terms. You could of course speculate that the PR number of the site will increase (as I hope this site will do) and then as the score increases so will your backlink score.
As this blog is added to and more genuine comments/replies are posted, the PR number of this blog will increase. It has a PR=0 score at present. This should tell the spammers using spambots posting on this site that they are wasting their time; they are certainly wasting mine. I feel that the people posting or the sites that are getting promoted in this way, should get their come-uppance before long. Despite the few comments posted on this site, it does get a lot of spam which automatically gets filtered out by the WordPress plugin ‘Akismet’. 99.9% of the comments in the spam filter, I delete.
Anyone actually reading a post and leaving a comment on this website (who are not spambots) must realize that a comment must have something to do with the topic. It has to be relevant. Google will not rank this site higher and it will remain with a low overall quality score if Google find the comments not relevant. Genuine comments will get approved whether I agree with the comment or not. Even if a comment has anything negative to say, as long as the reply is genuine and has relevancy to the subject, then you can be assured your comment will get posted.
So, back to the main subject of backlinking. It is better to seek out websites that have high PR numbers and a PR=4 rating ought to be the minimum to go for. A PR=4 backlink is worth tens of PR=1 links and thousands of Pr=0 links.
To get your website ranked more highly by Google for specific keywords, you have to get more backlinks to your website related to those keywords, To rival your nearest competitor who is above you in the rankings, you have to get a backlink score greater than they have. For example if your competitor has a backlink score of 100 and you have a score of 99, then you have to get a score of 101 at least, in order to rank higher (given all other measures are equal). A PR number is not achieved solely on backlink scores. The overall rating has to do with Quality Score and that has a lot to do with relevancy and meeting the requirements of a website laid down by Google.
If you look at the number one position on Google for your keyword/keyword phrase and find it has a backlink score of 1,000 and you have a score of say 3, then you have got to increase your backlink score by 998. The easiest way to do this is not place links on websites with a PR=1 or you have to do this 998 times. If you go for a score of PR=4 you would only have to create 225 links. The higher the PR number, the less links you have to place. The PR rating is not necessarily linear, so take my examples as a guidline and not as precise figures. Why post a link on a page with a PR=0; it is a shear waste of time. Remember, the links have to stick or else, if they are deleted, you do not have a backlink.
I hope this gives you some useful guidance especially if you have been told that backlinks are important to get, but you did not understand how it works until now.
Please post a comment and if your comment is relevant to the subject, it will get approved. I do not want to have to have to waste my time deleting irrelevant comments.
